  4. Don't infringe copyright
Write your own stories - don't copy someone else's, or use someone else's material - you may be infringing copyright law. Don't use images or other media that you don't have permission to use.
  5. Don't abuse the system
Don't spam or flood (this means posting a similar comment again and again). Only report a story to the administrator (using the "Report" button next to the problem story) if you genuinely believe it to be offensive. See Report abuse

Searching

Search Tips

  • If you carry out a search, and get too many search results, but very few are exactly what you wanted, try another search, but be more specific. For instance if you are looking for a football story about Everton in the 1988, don't just type 'football', type 'football at everton, 1988'.
  • Or you can try to narrow your search be selecting a particular time frame, or era.
  • If you carry out a search, but don't get any results, try to think what other words may describe what you are looking for. For example, if you are wanting to find stories about refuse collecting, and 'refuse collection' hasn't given you any stories, try typing words like 'rubbish' and 'bins', and try typing 'refuse' without 'collection'.
  • You can use upper or lower case - the results returned will be the same. Don't bother with words like 'and' as the search term will automatically ignore it.
  • If you want to search for a story by a particular person, type their display name into the search box and you'll see all the stories they have contributed to.

Tips to get you started

What can I write?

You can write about anything you want - it can be personal memories, or maybe you know something about Liverpool that you would like to tell other people?

Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

  • Did you grow up in Liverpool?
  • What was your school like? - What were the school dinners like!
  • Where did you play - have the streets changed?
  • Are there new buildings?
  • What did you do for Christmas?
  • What was it like in the summer?
  • Were you or a relative in Liverpool during the war - do they remember the blitz? The food? The American soldiers?
  • Do you remember seeing your first Everton or Liverpool match? Have you ever met a player?
  • Do you the know history of the church, or why a street has a particular name?
  • Were any battles fought here?
Or you can ask a question that you would like others to answer. Is there a building you've always wanted to know about? Or a rumour - a ghost story, or a local tale you'd like to get to the bottom of? Or do you want to know what it was like in Liverpool in the 1950's or 1850's? Ask a question, and see if someone can answer you.
note

Make sure you follow the house rules when writing a story!

See House Rules.

How do I go about writing?

Once you have an idea about the story you would like to tell, it may be helpful to jot it down on paper before you add it to the site, so you remember everything you want to say without feeling pressured. Alternatively, you start writing your story in the Story Pad, and save it as a draft, to come back to another day. If you have written your story on the computer as a word document, you can use copy and paste to paste it into the "Write your story" section of the Story Pad.

Mark your story as a question

Choose a date: When did your story happen?

Top Tips

idea Try to be as accurate as you can with the date. If you just put Twentieth Century, when really the story happened in the 1960s, it will seem to have happened for a lot longer than it did. Being accurate helps the Timeline to show how Liverpool has changed through time.

Save a draft

When you view a draft, you can choose to:

  • print the draft (this will open your browser's print dialogue)
